Binaa for Democracy and Development: 

 Overview and Upcoming Projects 

Introduction: 

Binaa for Democracy and Development is youth lead organization a non-governmental organization non- profit in Sudan and Uganda, dedicated to promoting democracy, human rights, and sustainable development in conflict-affected areas such as Darfur. With a track record of impactful projects focused on community empowerment, peacebuilding, and capacity development, Binaa is now preparing to launch two significant initiatives: “Education for Justice: Empowering Sudanese youth women and men for post- War Sudan” and “Civic Education.” These projects aim to address the critical need for education, transitional justice and civic engagement in a post-war context, fostering resilience and active participation among Sudanese communities. 

 Implemented Projects: 

 1. Good Governance Activities (March 2023) 

Binaa organized a three-day workshop aimed at enhancing awareness about democratic transformation in Sudan. Targeting 19 civil society activists, including 9 females and 10 males aged 19-25, the workshop covered principles, mechanisms, and measurement standards of good governance. Participants engaged in teamwork and group discussions, leading to positive feedback on the training’s effectiveness. 

 2. Strategic Planning Training Course Activities (November 2022) 

In November 2022, Binaa conducted a three-day training course on institutional strategic planning for 16 participants. The course emphasized planning fundamentals, vision creation, and goal definition, with participants developing short, medium, and long-term strategic plans. The training was well-received, highlighting the participants’ appreciation for the content and facilitators. 

 3. Dialogue Sessions on Peace Agreements (September 2022) 

In collaboration with the Civic Laboratory Organization, Binaa hosted a dialogue session to celebrate the International Day of Peace. This session focused on the realities of peace agreements in Sudan, particularly the Juba Peace Agreement. Expert-led discussions resulted in valuable recommendations for enhancing civil society’s role in monitoring peace agreements. 

 4. Grassroots Building Activities (December 2021) 

Binaa partnered with the Adeela Project for Culture and Arts to conduct a workshop that strengthened local communities’ grassroots capacities. Held in El Fasher, this three-day workshop targeted the Abu Shook Resistance Committee, raising awareness about grassroots engagement and local governance. Participants concluded with a dialogue that emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration. 

 5. Alternatives to Violence Project (June 2024) 

In collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Sudan Office, Binaa implemented the Alternatives to Violence Project, which promotes nonviolence as a strategy for conflict resolution. Engaging community members through workshops and discussions, the project emphasized peaceful conflict resolution and social change. 

6. Psychosocial Support Activities (April 2024) 

In partnership with Manaash Cultural Center, Binaa conducted psychosocial support activities in El Fasher, addressing the mental health needs of individuals affected by conflict. This initiative provided essential support and coping mechanisms for dealing with trauma and stress. 

7. Workshops on Nonviolence Methodologies Activities (April 2024) 

Binaa organized workshops focused on nonviolence methodologies to educate participants on peaceful conflict resolution and community engagement, contributing to a culture of peace within the local population. 

Upcoming Projects: 

 A. Education for Justice: Empowering Sudanese youth women and men for post- War Sudan 

Binaa is in the preparation phase for the “Education for Justice” project, which aims to promote education as a tool for social justice and civic engagement in post-war Sudan. The project will focus on: 

– Raising Awareness: Educating communities about their rights and the importance of justice in achieving peace. 

– Capacity Building: Developing educational programs that empower individuals with knowledge about democratic processes, human rights, and legal frameworks. 

– Community Engagement: Encouraging active participation in civic activities and local governance through workshops and training sessions. 

– Collaboration with Educational Institutions: Partnering with schools and universities to integrate justice and human rights education into curricula. 

B. Civic Education Project 

Binaa is also preparing to launch the “Civic Education” project, which aims to enhance civic knowledge and engagement among community members. This project will focus on: 

– Civic Awareness: Providing comprehensive training on the rights and responsibilities of citizens within a democratic framework. 

– Active Participation: Encouraging citizens to engage in civic duties, including voting, advocacy, and community service. 

– Training Workshops: Conducting workshops covering topics such as democratic governance, electoral processes, and the importance of civic engagement. 

– Youth Engagement: Targeting youth to foster a generation that is informed and active in democratic processes. 

The “Civic Education” project will play a critical role in empowering individuals to participate effectively in their communities, thereby strengthening the democratic fabric of Sudan. 

Through its diverse projects, including the upcoming “Education for Justice” and “Civic Education” initiatives, Binaa for Democracy and Development is making significant strides in enhancing community capacities, promoting good governance, and fostering peace in Sudan. Each initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to addressing specific community needs and contributing to the overall goals of sustainable development and social justice in the region. By investing in education and civic engagement, Binaa is helping to build a more informed, resilient, and active citizenry capable of shaping Sudan’s future.
